Photography Tips: Keep It Simple

Sometimes we, as photographers, like to make our images interesting by adding as many elements as possible. For landscapes we like to have an interesting foreground, middle and background, or we try and capture a person or animal in a natural setting. There is nothing wrong with that approach, but sometimes it is important to keep our images uncluttered.

Gliding Through A Blue Sky

When was looking at this photo I didn't think much of it at first, but I realized that an image like this is satisfying. What makes an image like "Gliding Through A Blue Sky" interesting? The interesting aspect of the image is the fact that the subject alone is the  area of interest. There is no where else in the image to steal the attention of the viewer. So next time you want to take a photo of something, think about how you can isolate your subject. There are different ways of doing that, such as blurring the background via a telephoto lens on a close subject or with a wide aperture lens. Another way of isolating your subject is pick a simple or plain background. The Canada Goose in the example image is a good example of picking a plain background.
