A Duel (Photo Of The Day March 25)

Dueling Canada Geese

Canada Geese have started to return to the George C Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in large numbers. Fights between different pairs of birds, like the one depicted above, are bound to become common sights as mating season approaches. In the image above you can see two male Geese biting each other, with the females circling around them, likely cheering on their mates. The fights are over territory, which is important when nesting. The areas that are more secluded are preferable, due to the large number of eagles, Hawks and Norther Harriers in the area. The fight lasted for several minutes and I took a lot of images, because they were moving quickly. Here is another image of the fight, from a few moments earlier.
