This female Downy Woodpecker was pecking away at a dead tree when I came down the path towards it. I was able to observe the bird for several minutes as it looked for insects in the bark. My immediate tendency might have been to snap off a few shots and move on, but this small bird was very active so that would not have sufficed. Having some time to think about the situation I realized that I wanted to get the bird while it was looking in my direction, with its' enter body in view. My patience paid off and I was able to get this shot. Shortly there after the Downy Woodpecker, obviously spooked by the shutter of my camera, took off to find a quieter place to feed.
