Sun Tanning, Photo Of The Day August 7

On a warm summer afternoon, it is not uncommon to see dragonflies resting in the reeds at the edge of a lake, pond. Catching the dragonflies while they are sunbathing isn't overly difficult, just don't block the light by standing in front of the sunlight. Blocking the harsh light might seem like a good idea, but shadows will often startle the dragonflies, causing them to take off. Using full sunlight can also be an advantage, because if you want to get the entire insect in focus, you need to stop down a lot. Today's image was shot at F8, but the shot could have easily used more depth of field to capture more detail in the wings.
