Layers can be used in several ways in any image, from stacks of rolling hills in a landscape to telling different stories in a single image with reflections. Today's image does just that, and if you look closely you can see several layers, each of which tells it's own story. This image could easily have been changed with a polarizing filter, which would have removed the reflections on the window, but that was not the goal in this case.
