Cascade Falls, Photo Of The Day May 30

Waterfalls are great subjects to shoot, but achieving the effects that you want can be difficult if the conditions are not right. Cascade Falls, near Mission BC, can be tricky to shoot, because if there is any direct sunlight the upper part of the falls will be the brightest part of the scene. There are a few ways to work around this, first using an ND filter to slow down the shutter speed, to achieve the silky appearance of the water. The second way to work around the large dynamic range of the scene is to bracket a number of shots and make an HDR file. In the case of this image of Cascade Falls, I used both methods.

  1. Nice shot Rob. Is that damn fence still somewhat in the way? I want to go back to shoot there again - probably in the Fall - and am curious about the fence.

    1. The fence is still there, but you can get under the fence near the small creek on the path. Just make sure you wear some boots, or you'll get wet feet in the process. In terms of water levels it is great right now, much better than last fall.
