Pileated Woodpeckers are beautiful birds to photograph, the bright red on their heads and cheeks make them stand out. This particular woodpecker seemed to have a reduced fear of humans, which is unfortunate, as the shooting session lasted for about 20 minutes. Today's photo was taken from 3.5m (12 feet) away. This is not unprecedented, during the late period of winter food starts to become more abundant and these hungry birds (which mostly feast on insects) can throw caution to the wind at times. This little Pileated Woodpecker did not stay that close for very long, as it quickly hopped to a tree a few meters away, while makings it's familiar call.
